Communication without trespass

Consent is the ethics of reality-bending contact.

Every message attempts to enter another mind, body, system, or future. Consentful Cybernetics studies how autonomous agents communicate, coordinate, and transform each other without erasing sovereignty.

If we put as much effort into witnessing consent as we currently put into extracting attention, we could build an astonishingly more humane communication layer.

From attention extraction to consentful communication.

The internet proved that communication can be engineered at planetary scale. We learned to capture attention, shape behavior, personalize stimulus, and optimize engagement.

Consentful Cybernetics asks a different question: what would happen if our systems became equally sophisticated at preserving agency, detecting ambiguity, clarifying scope, honoring revocation, and supporting repair?

The goal is not to automate consent judgments. The goal is to build witnessing systems that help humans and agents notice when consent is becoming unclear, pressured, stale, mis-scoped, or unsafe.

The first product: a Consent Dynamics Model.

A Consent Dynamics Model does not declare “consent happened.” It observes the conditions around consent: power, context, scope, timing, medium, hesitation, refusal-safety, reversibility, drift, repair, and witness.

Intent-context bundles

Every request or offer carries intent, scope, timing, affect, risk, power, and assumed context.

Receiver ability-fields

Every receiver has capacity, language, role, history, attention, safety, and ability to refuse.

Witnessed intersections

Consentful meaning emerges where projection meets capacity without trespass.

Training models to recognize consent dynamics.

The first technical frontier is not an AI that declares whether consent exists. That would be dangerous, brittle, and easily weaponized.

The frontier is a model trained to recognize consent-relevant dynamics: pressure, coercion, ambiguity, hesitation, stale permission, unsafe refusal conditions, scope drift, power imbalance, escalation, and repair.

With enough video, audio, text, and interaction-context data, we can study how people actually signal willingness, reluctance, confusion, compliance, withdrawal, and boundary formation across different media.

The model should function as a witness layer: surfacing uncertainty, prompting clarification, protecting refusal, and helping people repair before harm hardens into breach.

Consent and coercion are trajectories, not tokens.

Coercion often appears before explicit violation. Consent often weakens before formal revocation. A Consent Dynamics Model studies the motion: how a yes becomes pressured, how a no becomes unsafe, how silence becomes overloaded, and how power turns ambiguity into obligation.

Multimodal evidence

Video, audio, text, timing, pauses, interruptions, gaze, posture, emoji, edits, reactions, and response latency.

Contextual annotation

Relationship, power, stakes, medium, history, scope, reversibility, safety to refuse, and repair opportunity.

Protective intervention

Prompts that increase clarity, reduce pressure, renew scope, pause escalation, and preserve the receiver’s ability to say no.

Principles

A trustworthy yes is more valuable than a captured yes.
Consent is not a checkbox. It is temporal, scoped, relational, revocable, contextual, and alive.
Power expands responsibility. The party with more power bears more duty to resolve ambiguity before acting.
Silence is not a stable substrate. It may mean safety, fear, overload, confusion, refusal, deference, or nothing at all.
The model is a witness, not a cop. It should increase clarity, refusal-safety, reversibility, and repair.
Consent remains an attractor; action requires an artifact. The artifact must preserve its own limits.
Consentful communication happens when what I intend to project and what you are able to receive overlap without erasing either of us.

We are beginning with research, prototypes, language, and protocols for AI-mediated communication, human-agent negotiation, organizational trust, intimate systems, and civic dialogue.

Consentful Cybernetics is for people building communication systems that need to preserve sovereignty while enabling powerful coordination.
